General Information

Crankk Inc. is building the Internet for Things. It is a growing DePIN network of LoRaWAN gateways that provide connectivity for IoT devices. IoT (Internet Of Things) -devices collect data from their surroundings and transmit them over the long range, low powered (LoRaWAN) Crankk network. A Crankk gateway uses radio waves as an intermediary to receive the IoT-device's data and forwards it to the internet.

Realtime sensor data are considered a key component in tomorrow's automation. Sectors like agriculture, transportation, field research, home automation, remote aviation and autonomous driving are increasingly reliant on the Internet Of Things to stay connected and broadcast their data - even from places without internet.

✅ Anyone can deploy a Crankk gateway, expanding the network's coverage. Gateway owners earn $CRKK tokens for providing this coverage for IoT devices.

✅ The free, open source Crankk Operating system is designed to get the most out of a LoRaWAN gateway and allows for simultaneously participating in various (crypto)-projects alongside Crankk, increasing hardware utility, including full root access to the device.

✅ Crankk runs entirely on Kadena blockchain smart contracts, which allows for limitless scaling. This makes the Crankk IoT network especially suited for industry-wide adoption and guarantees its autonomous continuity.

Crankk is a truly community oriented DePin LoRaWAN project offering full flexibility in terms of hardware, software and User Experience.

Crankk has developed a free to use, open source operating system for gateways allowing full root access to your devices with an impressive UI, LoRa and blockchain statistics, system monitoring, built-in SSH client and a revolutionary option the simultaneously 'multimine' many (LoRa) projects alongside eachother, setting a new standard in the IoT and Crypto space. Crankk operates fully on the Kadena blockchain, which reduces gas fees, enhances security and eliminates the need to manually claim earned tokens. The Crankk rank eliminates the need for a denylist.

Free software to manage your gateways;
✅ No denylist;
✅ Automated reward distribution;
✅ Mobile 'All in one' app to manage wallets, gateways and sensors;
✅ User Dashboard offers wallets, gateways, explorer, exchange, sensors and support, all in one Dashboard.
✅ Community oriented support

Yes, that is possible. Crankk supports over 26 different gateway models thus far. Helium hotspots and many other LoRa gateways are supported. Also self-made or DIY gateways are supported. Please refer to our guides section for clear instructions on how to flash your specific model. Don't see your model in the list? Send us an e-mail and we'll try to include it in future builds.

⚠️ Keep in mind that if you want to provide coverage for both Helium and Crankk, your gateway should be onboarded to the Helium network before flashing it with the Crankk firmware.

Kadena is a blockchain platform known for its low gas fees, security, and scalability. Crankk uses Kadena to run its decentralized network while minimizing transaction costs and ensuring network reliability.

We highly recommend to activate the Crankk card in your User Dashboard and link your gateway to it for a seamless experience. The Crankk card automatically adds funds to low-balance wallets to make sure no wallet runs out of funds to pay for transaction fees on the Kadena blockchain.

Your gateway constantly transacts with the blockchain: every beacon, witness or consensus event is processed 'on chain'. These transactions cost gas fees which are paid by your gateway's wallet. If your gateway wallet runs too low on KDA to pay for gas fees, your gateway's actions will be rejected by the blockchain and your gateway will not be rewarded. Instead of regularly funding your gateway wallet manually, activate the Crankk card to do this for you.

Mining and Earning

Multimining is activated by default on licensed gateways. Access the multimining features via the Local Dashboard of your gateway: navigate to your gateway's Local Dashboard, select 'Multimining' from the menu and choose which projects to add to your gateway.

During the beta phase of the Multimining feature, it is free to use for everyone after switching your gateway's firmware to the beta branch.

Do nothing and remain Participated in Proof Of Trust in order to keep earning rewards. Only if you decide to stop providing rewarded coverage with your gateway, you should unparticipate from Proof Of Trust (PoT). You are able to fully and costlessly withdraw all your staked tokens after the 1 year term ends. Unparticipating and withdrawing your tokens before the 1 year term is possible. However, this will result in paying an early termination fee of 50% of your staked tokens. Wait until after the 1 year Term ends to avoid the fee.

You need a LoRaWAN gateway with an antenna. Such devices are widely available. They can be bought on various (secondhand) markets or you can build one yourself. Any basic computing device (like a Raspberry Pi) with a connected LoRaWAN radio module and an antenna will work. Crankk supports over 26 known gateway models and encourages the use of DIY gateways.

ℹ️ For a full list of supported devices, please check out https://crankk.io/guides/

Crankk (CRKK) tokens are earned by setting up a LoRaWAN gateway that provides wireless IoT coverage. The rewarded tokens are distributed based on the amount and quality of coverage provided by your setup. Get started with Crankk by installing Crankk firmware to your gateway, onboarding your gateway to the Crankk network, buying a license and participating in providing coverage by staking a portion of CRKK tokens as Proof-of-Trust (PoT) in the consensus mechanism.

ℹ️ https://crankk.wiki/docs/get-started/

Your gateway constantly transacts with the blockchain. The transaction costs are called gas fees. Every beacon, witness or consensus event is processed 'on chain'. Also setting your location, activating your Crankk card or using the DEX are all handled by the Kadena blockchain. Such decentralised automation and transparency makes the Crankk network stand out among competitors.

Asking the blockchain to handle requests implies a processing cost: gas fees. These gas fees are paid by your gateway's wallet. If your gateway wallet runs too low on KDA to pay for gas fees, your gateway's actions will be rejected by the blockchain and your gateway will not be rewarded. Make sure to always have enough funds in your gateway wallet to pay for the gas fees. 1 KDA on chain 0 and 1 KDA on chain 19 of your gateway's wallet should last for months.

Network and Coverage

Coverage & rank

Rewards are based on successfully completing 'beaconing-witnessing' cycles. Witnessing many other gateway's beacons proves good coverage and is rewarded each time. Rewards are then weighed (resized) based on your gateway's rank before being distributed to your wallet. Your gateway's rank should be equal to or above the network average to be eligible for the full reward. Your rank indicates your gateway's usefulness.

Place your gateway at an optimal distance from other gateways to maximize network coverage and increase your rank. Ensure they are not too close to each other to avoid redundant coverage overlap. This would decrease its rank.

Positioning & hardware

Best results are achieved if your gateway (antenna) has a 'clear line of sight' to other gateways and potential sensors. Higher is usually better; outside is better than inside; behind a window is better than behind a wall.

A high-quality setup returns higher rewards: use a quality LoRaWAN antenna that suits your location, use a short (low-loss) coax cable to connect your antenna to your gateway and use as little connectors in between as possible. Place your antenna as high up as possible.

Yes. We are currently beta-testing sensor utility and sensor onboarding. Sensor data is available in both the User Dashboard and in the mobile app. Open a ticket in our official Discord server and our support team will guide you through the process of setting up and onboarding your sensors.

Proof-of-Network-Participation ensures that IoT gateways provide reliable network service. It validates each gateway’s location and performance to ensure accurate token distribution.

The idea is that if the Crankk network provides good coverage for a geographic area then it can be relied on without thinking much about where exactly the service is needed within that area. Coverage for that area is proven by the network. A failure would be if coverage shows as “proven” for the area but somehow radio packets transmitted by smart meters or trackers are not picked up by the network because maybe some nodes successfully lied about providing coverage for that area. The goal of the PoNP concept is to prevent this from happening.

Crankk supports IoT devices that communicate using LoRaWAN. Sensors, smart meters, trackers and any other device that needs the 'Internet of Things' to convey its data to the internet can work with Crankk. Sectors like agriculture, transportation services, field research, home automation, remote aviation and others benefit from using LoRaWAN technology.

Newly onboarded gateways show 0% rank during the first week. Your rank is being determined. It should become visible after a week.

At the start of each week, the current rank is reset and the upcoming rank is calculated. This often results in a displayed rank of 0%. This issue is being worked on. Rest assured, your rank should restore itself within 24 h.

Purchasing a license is possible after onboarding your gateway. Login to your User Dashboard and navigate to the 'License' tab of your gateway. A license purchase can be made from there. The license should be purchased paying the correct amount of CRKK or KDA tokens: make sure you have enough balance in the wallet you wish to buy the license for; make sure this balance sits on the same chain as where your linked gateway was onboarded to. A license will activate your device and enable you to start providing rewarded coverage for IoT devices. A license also gives full access to the One-Click Multimining features of the Crankk operating system. Your license is tied to your wallet. A wallet can only hold one license. A separate license is needed for every gateway onboarded.

ℹ️ How to buy a license: https://crankk.wiki/docs/license/

You could get lucky. Follow Crankk's social media channels to stay informed about occasional license giveaways and competitions.

Licenses are always available for purchase in your User Dashboard: navigate to the 'License' tab of your gateway and select to purchase a Lifetime license, a Monthly Subscription or a License Pack at discount price; Navigate to the 'License Packs' section of the User Dashboard to manage your Pack's license codes.

Tokenomics and Governance

200 Million CRKK tokens will be distributed over a 10-year period, starting from Q1 2022. 80% goes to miners, 8% to the Crankk team, 4% to investors, 4% for marketing, and 4% for liquidity creation purposes. The only way to earn Crankk tokens is by contributing to the network. A daily distribution of around* 43.836 CRKK tokens among active gateways is expected during this 10-year emission period.

Crankk is a decentralized, community-driven network with governance and decision-making distributed among its participants.

Technical information

Yes. That is possible. It is not necessary to have both network interface controllers active, but it will not harm your device. It will neither affect gateway performance.

ℹ️ Learn to connect over WiFi https://crankk.wiki/docs/connect-to-a-wifi-network/

The Local Dashboard shows real-time server latency in the 'System' tab. Login to your gateway's Local Dashboard and go to the System tab.

Advanced: install nmap via SSH to get a more detailed insight in your gateway's connectivity. Install using the folllowing commands:
sudo apt-get install nmap
nmap -Pn -p 8080 csap.crankk.io
nmap -Pn -p 8883 mqtt1.eu.crankk.org

Exclude your SSH client from VPN or firewall restrictions. Try if disabling your VPN or firewall solves the connectivity issue. If this solves the problem, create an exception or exclusion rule in your VPN or firewall settings to allow the SSH connection. Note that the ping is using ICMP protocol on port 80 and SSH connection uses port 22
